is $495.20 Our current paid
membership stands at 19.
Phil Kwitkowski, Treasurer
Chicago Area Timex Users Group
SECRETARY'S NotePad
MARCH 18, 1995
Members present: Abed Kahale,
Cy Herre, Phillip Kwitkowski,
Jeff DeCourtney, Bob Swoger,
Nazir Pashtoon, Larry Sauter,
and Bobby Muth.
Meeting began at 2:15 P.M. Gary
Lessenberry has some half
height disk drives for sale and
Phil Kwitkowski is going to
purchase all three of them.
Phillip also has a RAM disk
courtesy of Joan Kealy and he
is happy with it. He wished for
a color monitor and now he has
three. Joan now has a couple of
years of Update! as a gift from
Phil in return. After seeing
the 2068 on the monitor, Phil
says the 2068 needs to be
adjusted and Nazir suggested
that for about $2.00 he could
go RGB and everything will be a
whole lot better.
Bob Swoger has been programming
a screen dump program that is
rather unique and beautiful in
that it produced a very large
picture of Brooke Shields
printed on an EPSON MX-80
printer that the manual says
will not print graphics. It
took approximately 20 to 30
minutes to print and 2 or 3
hours to program. Bob knew he
had it right when it started to
write giant letters from the
program listing during LPRINT.
If Abed can transform it into
machine code, it won't take so
long to print a picture as it
now does. Bob has finished the
software for LogiCall version
6.0 and he is working on the
manual for its use. It will be
available at RMG and Mechanical
Affinity for $15.00 just before
the Dayton ComputerFest.
Tasword Two for LogiCall v6.0
will save and load from tape
whereas before it would load
only.
Don Lambert sent Nazir some
Zebra controllers that were
intermittent and Nazir was
finally able to repair them
since they would work if placed
on their side and would fail to
work when placed upright.
The last newsletter from LIST
brought up the fact that all
current computers in existence
with a clock and calendar on
board will have a hard time
when the year reaches 2000
because there has been no
provision for changing from 19
to 20 in the computer calendar.
That doesn't apply to the Timex
TS2068 because it has no clock
or calendar. Sinclair ZX
machines win again!
Jeff DeCourtney is moving to
New Mexico because his folks
are moving there to Albuquerque
on the North East side. We wish
him good luck in getting a new
job there and settling down
there.
Bob got Print Factory and was
disapointed that he could not
produce all the great looking
pictures that TTSUC could do.
He thinks that a bunch of files
are missing. Can any of our
readers supply Bob with a list
of the files that should be
included with the Print Factory
product? Syne Link used the
Print Factory to produce the
beautiful covers on their
newsletters.
The meeting was adjourned at
3:43 P.M.
April 22,1995
Members present: Bob Swoger,
Nazir Pashtoon, Jeff
Decourtney, John Donaldson,
Larry Sauter, Abed Kahale and
Phillip Kwitkowski.
Bob received a letter from Mr.
Paul Holmgren with a check
enclosed for the T/SNUG portion
of the SNUG assets and a list
of names to give the people a
choice of a subscription to
ZXir QLive Alive! publication,
if that be their wishes. Our
heartfelt thanks to Mr.
Holmgren.
Bob helped a Marie Kendall with
a problem she was having and it
was solved very easily. She was
having a problem with her taxes
on VU CALC and her large
printer which wouldn't print in
vertical, but would print
horizontally. Bob dropped her a
note telling her to use VU CALC
to Tasword to print out the
data and it worked for her very
nicely. Bob also included a new
LarKen instruction manual that
is very nicely laid out.
John McMichael from Wyoming has
some video digitizer boards and
some video cameras and color to
gray scale converters to
facilitate printing stored
video from TV and camcorders to
a storage spot on the 2068 to
be printed on the large
printer.
The meeting was adjourned at
4:08 P.M.

ARTICLES
In order to let the community
know that there are plenty of
active members out here in the
mid-west, we wish to run
articles on each of our members
and let you know what sort of
things they are using their
Sinclair machines for. We will
use RLEs to let you see their

MEET JEFF DECOURTNEY

Fe Pad

Jeff DeCourtney joined CATUG in
the Spring of 1994 while he
lived in Elmhurst. In all that
time he only missed one
meeting! Though his interest at
the time was in the
Zx81/TS1000, a TS2068 was
presented to him by the club.
His present main activity with
the TS2068 is exploring every
program he can get his hands on
available on from tapes,
magazines and books. Geometric
and graphic displays are his
present delight. As accessories
became available Jeff improved
his collection.
At this time Jeff uses a color
monitor, G.E. data tape deck,
original Sinclair joystick and
TS2040 printer. Jeff has been
unable to acquire a disk drive
interface for his TS2068 so far
as he has relocated to
Albuquerque, New Mexico.
When he locates a job there, he
hopes to acquire a large
printer with interface as well
as a disk drive interface. We
have yet to hear from him at
his new location. An RLE of
Jeff is in the Club BBS.

LIST! Are you LISTening?
by
Bob Swoger
In his June issue of QL Corner,
Bob Gilder wrote about Ruth
Fegley having "oxidation
problems on the interface pins
and by pressing the interface
towards the QL body tends to
remove the oxidation.” He also
said Bob Malloy four computers
with the same symptoms - one or
more of the socketed IC's had
to be reseated into their
respective sockets and the QL's
then operated as they should.
Also, the Keyboard 90 interface
also had to be reseated into
its respective socket.
Bob then stated "periodically,
all plugged-in devices such as
interfaces and IC's should be
partially removed and then
pushed’ back into their
respective sockets for flawless
computer operation without
power on!"
Bob!, didn't you get to read
NIN Volume 7 Number 5? It
states "If you are having
trouble with ICs in IC sockets,
clean them with tuner cleaner
if you wish. Then put some
mineral oil in a saucer and dip
the IC pins into the mineral
oil before inserting the IC
into the socket. The IC will go
in so much easier!" Earlier in
the article it said "Tuner
cleaner just doesn’t do the job
because after the cleaning, no
lubricant is left behind so
corrosion will set in, not so
with mineral oil. Oxygen can't
get to the metal any more so
the electrical contact lasts
for many years.”
Those ICs and connectors should
have been installed with high
viscosity mineral oil (Squib
comes to mind), a laxative
obtained at the corner drug
store and applied with a tooth
pick on the connector or by
placing the ICs in a bowl with
just a little mineral oil at
the bottom as describe in the
NTN7.5 issue. Someone at
Motorola came to the
realization that if mineral oil
could keep people cleaned out
that in might work on
connectors and, I don't know
why, but it did!
I'm afraid that Bob Malloy and
Ruth Fegley will be back time
and time again until mineral
oil is used on those pins and
connectors. I give you this
information with 30 years
experience at Motorola as we
have used this trick to keep
our connectors from going
intermittent and there are no
more intermittent connections
here in CATUG country anymore!
GET OUT THE MINERAL OIL!
Saving TS2068 Programs
by
Bob Swoger
Marie Kendall asked how to
completely save a TS2068
program. Some programs in to
LogiCall collection of drives
have such saves. VU-CALC, VU-
FILE come to mind when one
thinks of programs that has
start up screens to contend
with.
Let us take VU-CALC for
example. What this program has
to save all at one moment is
the BASIC driver VUCALC.B1, the
screen file vc.C$ and the
machine code program vc.Cl. At
the moment of the request to
save the program, the BASIC
driver and the machine code
program are both in memory but
the start-up screen is not!
It was decided that the easiest
way to save the whole program
when the user might have only
one disk drive would be to have
the user start the save with
the original disk in the drive.
The screen could then be bought
into memory. Once that was
accomplished, the user could
put the destination disk into
that same drive and complete
the save routine with a simple
press of the ENTER key. To save
RAM space, it was decided that
the save instructions would be
placed in the manual and not in
the program! (Sorry for that
inconvenience, folks!) The
following statement was put
into the manual:
"Most users like to have a
separate disk to store VU-CALC
and VU-FILE data along with a
copy of the application. Both
of these drivers have a unique
save routine which allows you
to save the entire program to
another disk. When you select
the option to save the program,
the save routine calls the
screen code into RAM and,
WITHOUT TELLING YOU, waits
for you to press ENTER to
proceed with the save. Before
pressing ENTER you can put a
new disk into the current
drive, press ENTER and the
entire program (driver, machine
code file and screen file) will
be SAVEd on the new disk."
To permit the user to save this
program to disk I had to set up
a menu in BASIC to which the
machine code program could be
directed. With VU-CALC running
and the menu bar at the top of
the screen, #q is the way out
to the SAVE menu. When the user
selects the option to save the
program, the user response
directs the program pointer to
line 9992. The SAVE routine
looks something like this:
9992 RANDOMIZE USR 100: LOAD "v
